Port phone numbers into SignalWire
Bring your existing phone numbers with you when you move to SignalWire. You can port any number, wireless or business landline, by submitting a port request from the Dashboard. To port messaging service only and keep voice with your current carrier, use Hosted Messaging instead.
E911 registrations don’t transfer with a port. Once your port completes, assign an emergency address to the number like any other SignalWire number — see the E911 guide.
Prepare your port request
Have these details ready before you open the form:
- Project ID
- Number list
- Current provider name
- Current provider account number
- Account type (business or residential)
- Company name
- Authorized name
- Billing phone number
- Phone service address
- PIN
SignalWire needs a signed Letter of Authorization (LOA), dated within the past 30 days, before the port can begin processing. Download the LOA form that matches your request, complete it, and upload it with the request. SignalWire may also need Customer Service Record (CSR) documentation or previous billing statements from your current carrier.
Submit a port request
Open the port request form
In your SignalWire Dashboard, open Phone Numbers > Port Requests and click Initiate Port Request. The form opens in a new tab.
Track the port request
SignalWire submits your request to your current carrier, which must acknowledge it if the details are valid. The request then moves through these outcomes:
- Rejected: the carrier found information it couldn’t validate. SignalWire notifies you by email, and the request stays rejected until you respond with corrected details. If you don’t respond within a week, SignalWire cancels the request and closes the case.
- Scheduled: the carrier accepted the request and told SignalWire when to expect the port to complete. That Firm Order Commitment (FOC) date is the date and time the numbers become active in your SignalWire account, and SignalWire passes it on to you.
Check the case in the Dashboard often, in case SignalWire needs corrected information to finish the port.
Configure your numbers before the port completes
Once the FOC date is confirmed, SignalWire adds the numbers to your account ahead of time and confirms that they’ve been added. The numbers become active on the FOC date, so use the time before then to set up each number’s settings and webhooks.
A ported number that isn’t configured with a webhook won’t work correctly when it goes live.
Avoid delays
Small port orders usually complete within 7 business days without delays, and larger orders take longer. Toll-free numbers, Canadian numbers, and off-net numbers can take up to two weeks.
These issues commonly delay a port:
- Invalid fields, such as the service address, billing address, or name
- Missing PINs
- Several orders with conflicting information
- Inactive numbers in the request
